Leconfield Exhibition Weekend

MG Owner’s Club

I had heard about this event by the MG Club, which apparently included an autotest, but didn’t get an invitation to compete. Jon Meacock did though. Keen to have a go at the sprint event, close to home and at a venue well known to him.

Jon and the Golf were well prepared for the 2.5 mile circuit laid out on the local airfield with good weather to compliment the day.

Always a trier, Jon was not going to disappoint on the day. Possibly trying too hard, Jon was approaching the finish on one of his timed runs. Somehow, the Golf got away from him. He entered the finish at high speed, but backwards! The Golf took out the timing gear followed by the battery that operates it - but not before it gave Jon a time. Why waste the effort!

Past visitor’s to the airfield may know of the fences along parts of the tarmac there. Thick wooden posts with wire stapled to them. Still travelling at unabated speed, our hero was trying to bring said Golf under control when he encountered one of the aforementioned fences. The car ran along the fence which acted like a cheese wire on the bodywork, cutting into it and resulting in about £1500 of damage. Bang goes the no-claims bonus Jon! Fortunately he’s a paint sprayer by trade so maybe it’ll come out looking better than before. Hope he’s back soon, the 12 car season is upon us and we need him competing.
