Last Ditch Rally raises £450 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal

Beverley & District Motor Club marked Remembrance Sunday in fitting style with the return of the Last Ditch Rally, a special 75th anniversary touring assembly that raised £450 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Crews gathered at the Bay Horse in Cherry Burton to enjoy a catch-up before setting out on the 104-mile route, which recreated much of the original 1969 12 car navigational event. Before the start, everyone joined together to observe the two-minute silence, reflecting on the true meaning of the day.

The entry brought together a variety of classic and modern cars, with many crews embracing the 1960s theme in dress and spirit. The route took them across the scenic Yorkshire Wolds, with codeboards and traditional Beverley and District Motor Club navigational challenges to keep the expert navigators on their toes.

Prizes were presented back at the finish, recognising standout efforts for Spirit of the Rally and Best Period Recreation. There were also navigational awards for Most Expert Expert and Keenest Novice.

The Best Period Recreation award was shared between Car 15, Ollie Smith & Simone Wallis, who dressed in brilliant Woodstock-inspired flower power outfits, and Car 12, Michael Smith & Pete Dalton, who impressed everyone by wearing their original race suits from the era.

Spirit of the Rally went to Car 20, Simon Bentley & Nicola Harper – after Simon drove straight from an overnight Welsh rally to join the event dressed as Steed to Nicola’s Mrs Peel, and still tackled the navigation with style. Keenest Novice was awarded to Car 23, Chris & Amanda Sheffield, who returned to Beverley events after a long time away and were first back to the Bay Horse, having navigated the tulip roadbook perfectly.

Finally, Most Expert Expert went to Car 16, David & Yvonne Wainwright, whose sharp navigation skills stood out despite a few deliberately tricky codeboards along the route.

With entry fees contributing to the donation, the Club raised £450 for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, which provides year-round support to serving and former members of the Armed Forces community and their families.

Beverley & District Motor Club would like to thank everyone who took part for helping to make this nostalgic event such a success, and to express special thanks to the Bay Horse in Cherry Burton for their warm welcome and hospitality throughout the day.
